Overview

Purpose of Role

The Junior Systems Engineer is responsible for the monitoring of the day-to-day technical support operations for services provided.  This role covers daily planning, service level monitoring, help desk monitoring and resource allocation. The aim of the role is to ensure the highest levels of service and systems uptime for all platforms managed by Vubiquity, achieved through a proactive approach to support and systems maintenance and a positive reactive response to issues as and when they may arise

Primary Activities and KPI’s

  • Prediction and prevention of events that impact performance and service
  • Quick diagnosis and remediation of service outages and incidents 
  • Good communication with the technology teams to ensure information is dispersed effectively
  • Supporting the Software team with their projects and rollouts

Responsibilities

  • End-to-end server operations support
  • Enhancements of production and related infrastructures
  • Passion for technology with a real desire to learn and improve
  • Technical support for all server infrastructures for development, staging and live production systems, Including reviewing log files to trace root cause
  • Support, both in office hours, on a rota for out-of-hours and on call
  • Technical assistance on infrastructure projects 
  • Frequent Scripting and development around the Business Workflows
  • Support server configuration, installation and maintenance
  • Root cause analysis of identified problems and propose corrective and preventive action plans to resolve them, seeing them through to completion
  • A consistent approach to user support, service levels and implementation of best practice standards within the team
  • Maintaining a mindset of continuous improvement in terms of efficiency of support processes, customer satisfaction, and the application of tools for monitoring, managing and optimisation.

 

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Some experience within the web or media technology environments
  • Proven ability to work with speed and accuracy to deadlines
  • Software installation and configuration of Linux, CentOS/RHEL based systems
  • Knowledge of MySQL or Postgresql
  • Linux scripting knowledge (Bash, Python)
  • Knowledge of XML, JSON and similar Markup Languages
  • Must have a good understanding of a “services business” in a high tech environment, from a supplier, integrator, or operator’s point of view
  • Experience dealing with Java application servers
  • Understanding of TCP/IP
  • Monitoring solutions, Nagios/NRPE protocol
  • Developing automated workflows for business needs
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to tailor communication to audience to achieve desired results
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, combined with the ability to provide quick resolution to problems
  • Must be customer-service orientated and believe in teamwork, collaboration, adaptability and initiative
  • Time management and organizational skills 
  • Ability to effectively operate within diverse and cross-functional groups
  • Demonstrated success with working effectively with technical players
  • Ability to accommodate change and adapt accordingly
